Call for chapter abstracts (closed on May 1, 2007)
ICA 2007 conference [theme] book
Participation and media production. Critical reflections on content creation
Edited by Nico Carpentier and Benjamin De Cleen
WHO is invited to submit?

A clear preference is given to the participants of the ICA 2007 San Francisco conference that are part of the theme flow or of the keynote panels. As an exception, proposals from other ICA 2007 conference participants may be included, if these proposals are relevant to the theme of the book.
Participation in the ICA 2007 San Francisco conference is a condition to be included in the theme book.

WHAT are we seeking?

The book will include twelve 4000-word chapters. It will be a standard edited volume, focused on a specific topic, which is (strongly) related to the conference theme. This book will not be a conference proceedings publication.
This call is aimed at establishing the interest of the (theme) conference participants in contributing to this book. For this reason, we call for chapter abstracts, although full (4000 word) chapters are of course also acceptable. The actual selection of the abstracts and chapters will take place soon after the May conference, but the deadline for sending in abstracts is May 1, 2007.
In order to be accepted, chapter proposals have to relate to the book theme, as captured by its title: Participation and media production. Critical reflections on content creation. The book will focus on mediated communication (in the broadest possible way) as the result of a complex interaction between a variety of people, groups and organisations, including professionals and non-professionals, audiences and users, citizens and consumers, individuals and collectivities, societal elites and 'ordinary people', powerless, powerful and empowered people. The book will explore the conditions under which these voices may be incorporated, facilitated, or excluded.
The book is strongly related to the ICA 07 conference theme, Creating Communication: Content, Control and Critique. As the original call of the conference theme provides the context of this book call, it is included in appendix. Proposals for book chapters should nevertheless relate to the description mentioned in the previous paragraph.

WHO will publish it?

The book will be published by Cambridge Scholars Publishers (http://www.c-s-p.org/)

What is the deadline for submissions?

Proposals need to be sent to the editors (by regular mail or email) before May 1, 2007 (17:00 GMT).
These proposals should include a 300-word chapter abstract, and a clear committal to send in the completed 4000-word chapter before August 1, 2007 (17:00 GMT).

TO WHOM should it be sent?

Chapter proposals can be sent by regular mail or e-mail (attachment in .rtf, or .pdf format) to:
