Michael Schudson is Professor of Communication and Adjunct Professor of
Sociology at the University of California, San Diego where he has taught
since l980. He is also Professor of Communication at the Graduate School
of Journalism, Columbia University, an appointment that began in 2006 and
brings him to Columbia each fall semester.
Schudson is the author of six books on the history and sociology of the
American news media, advertising, cultural memory, and the history of
civic engagement in the United States. His honors include a Guggenheim
Fellowship and a MacArthur Foundation fellowship.
Schudson's most recent works are The Good Citizen: A History of American
Civic Life, (l998), an original interpretation of the historical
transformation of the practices and the ideals of civic participation and
The Sociology of News (2003), a synthesis of social scientific views and
controversies about the character of contemporary journalism. He is
presently writing a history of changes in the nature of public candor in
the United States since 1960.
