Dear IAMCR member,
Next week, on 11 May 2020, the online IAMCR elections for the Executive Board (EB) and International Council (IC) will start.

As a candidate for the IAMCR presidency, I thought it to be appropriate and necessary at the same time to reach out to you, and to invite you to consider a few things.
First, I would like to ask you to vote in the IAMCR elections. These elections are part of the democratic culture of our organisation, and they are important.
My main request to you, as IAMCR member, is to vote. I might have some preferences on who you could consider voting for, but my most important request to you, at this stage, is to vote. It does not take a lot of your time to vote, and it matters a lot, to all candidates, and to the organisation as a whole. I do understand that there are many things on your mind (especially in C19 times), and there are many good causes that are asking for your attention as well, but I would still like to ask you to vote.
Second, as a candidate president I have prepared a series of statements. I will not burden you with long declarations of intent in this email, but I warmly invite you to read the text that I wrote ("Quo Vadis, IAMCR?"), and to watch the five videos (called "Lockdown fireside talks") that I produced for this purpose.

These documents contain my perspective on the future of IAMCR, and it is on the basis of these ideas that I invite you to vote for me, as candidate president. It is no secret that organisations with a long history of existence are a bit averse to change (and IAMCR is not different in this regard). Your vote for me will also matter to strengthen the push for what I see as the further improvement of an already well-running (and well-managed) organisation.
Third, I want to ask you to send in an endorsement for me, and for the candidates that I support. This can be done until 28 May, by emailing your endorsement to Beate Josephi at beate.josephi at sydney.edu.au AND to Valeria Zamisch at membership at iamcr.org.
If you do decide to send in an endorsement, I have an additional request for you. In that scenario, you are also invited to add one wish for the future of IAMCR to your endorsement. IAMCR is doing well, but there are many things that can improve, as always. I not only like to speak/write to you, but I also like to listen to what you have to say, and one way of doing this is to have you add a wish for the future (specifically in relation to IAMCR, I should probably add) to your endorsement.
As you can read on the IAMCR endorsement pages (at https://iamcr.org/candidate-endorsements-2020), there are a number of candidates who I explicitly support, among the many fine candidates we have. In this email, I want to focus on the EB, where I have expressed (and continue to express) my support for Andrea Medrado, who is running for vice-president (see https://vimeo.com/414477732), Gerard Goggin, who is the candidate for a second term as Secretary General, and Else van der Fliert, who is running for a second term as Treasurer.
The last request in this email consists of asking for your forgiveness for writing this email in English only. I deeply respect and actively support our organisation's linguistic diversity, and the many other diversities that together make IAMCR what it is - the organisation I care about. And I very much know how it feels to struggle with the English language (for your information, my native language is Dutch - maar dat is een taal die maar weinig IAMCR leden kunnen begrijpen, dus Engels is misschien af en toe toch wel handiger) But I also want to be a (candidate) president that is clear about what he can do and the skills he has, but also as someone who acknowledges his limitations. Much to my regret: Writing to you in Spanish (and even in French) is one of these limitations ...

Comme candidat à la présidence de l’AIERI, j’ai pensé qu’il était convenable et nécessaire de faire appel à vous et de vous inviter à prendre en considération plusieurs points.
D’abord, je voudrais vous demander de voter pour les élections de l’AIERI. Ces élections font partie de la vie démocratique de notre organisation et elles sont donc importantes. Ceci est ma demande principale. J’ai évidemment quelques préférences sur la personne pour laquelle j’aimerais bien que vous votiez mais, à cette étape, ma requête est vraiment de vous demander de voter. Cela ne vous prendra pas trop de temps et cela tient au cœur de tous les candidats et de notre organisation dans son ensemble. Bien sûr, je comprends que nos esprits sont tous occupés par beaucoup de choses en ce moment (surtout avec le C19 !) et tout un tas de bonnes raisons requiert aussi notre attention. Malgré tout, je continue d’insister pour que vous votiez.
Ensuite, comme candidat à la présidence, j’ai préparé une série de positions. Dans ce courriel, je ne chargerai pas votre barque avec de longues déclarations d’intention mais, bien sûr, je vous invite cordialement à lire le texte que j’ai intitulé « Où va l’AIERI ? » et à regarder les 5 vidéos (dénommées « Conversations au coin du feu en ces temps de confinement » - "Lockdown fireside talks") que j’ai aussi produites.

Ces documents contiennent mon point de vue sur le futur de l’AIERI et c’est sur la base de ces idées que je vous invite à votre pour ma candidature à la présidence de l’AIERI. Voter pour moi serait aussi une occasion de renforcer ce que je vois comme une amélioration future d’une organisation qui avance déjà bien (et est bien gérée).
Troisièmement, je voudrais que vous apportiez votre soutien à moi-même et aux candidats que je soutiens. Cela peut être fait jusqu’au 28 mai en envoyant un courriel de soutien à Beate Josephi (beate.josephi at sydney.edu.au) ET à Valeria Zamisch (membership at iamcr.org).
Si vous décidez d’envoyer votre soutien, j’ai une autre requête à vous faire. Je vous invite aussi à ajouter un souhait pour le futur de l’AIERI. AIERI va bien mais il y a beaucoup de choses à améliorer comme toujours. Je n’ai pas seulement envie de vous parler ou de vous écrire mais j’ai aussi envie d’écouter ce que vous avez envie de dire. Une manière de le faire est d’ajouter à votre soutien ce souhait pour le futur (évidemment en relation avec l’AIERI, aurais-je dû ajouter !)
Comme vous pouvez le lire sur les pages « Soutiens à l’AIERI » (https://iamcr.org/candidate-endorsements-2020), il y a un certain nombre de candidats que je soutiens explicitement, parmi les nombreux excellents candidats qui se présentent. Dans ce courriel, je veux simplement attirer votre attention sur le Comité Exécutif dans lequel je me suis exprimé (et continue à m’exprimer) et apporter mon soutien à Andrea Medrado, qui candidate à la vice- présidence (https://vimeo.com/414477732), Gerard Goggin, qui candidate à un deuxième mandat de Secrétaire Général et Else van der Fliert, qui candidate à un deuxième mandat de Trésorier.
Ma dernière demande dans ce mail consiste à vous demander de m’excuser pour avoir écrit ce courriel en Anglais uniquement. Je respecte profondément et soutiens activement la diversité linguistique de notre organisation et de nombresues autres diversités qui font ce que l’AIERI est – l’organisation dont je me préoccupe. Et je ssais très bien à quoi ressemble un combat avec l’Anglais (mon langue natale est le Néerlandais - maar dat is een taal die maar weinig AIERI leden kunnen begrijpen, dus Engels is misschien af en toe toch wel handiger). Mais je veux être aussi un (candidat) président qui souhaite être clair et honnête sur ce qu’il peut faire et sur ces compétences et, en même temps, un (candidat) président qui connaît ses limites. A mon grand regret, vous écrire en Espagnol (et même en Français) est une de ces limites !
